KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Mustapha @ Mohd Yunus Sakmud has been appointed as the new Sabah PKR chairman.
Party information chief Fahmi Fadzil said the decision was reached in its central leadership council meeting today.
This effectively ends the Sabah PKR leadership issue, which came after 15 PKR division chiefs in the state, led by Kota Marudu branch chief, Sazalye Donol Abdullah signed statutory declarations (SDs) to express that they had lost their confidence in former Sabah PKR chairman Datuk Dr Sangkar Rasam's leadership.
Sangkar has been appointed to the central leadership council.
Mustapha is deputy higher education minister and Sepanggar MP. The new Sabah PKR leadership will also see Inanam assemblyman Peto Galim becoming the state party deputy chairman.
Meanwhile, PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, who was Federal Territory PKR chairman and Johor PKR chairman, has relinquished these posts.
Bandar Tun Razak branch chief Azmin Abidin would now become the Federal Territory PKR chairman. Azmin is political secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Ledang member of parliament Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh is the Johor PKR chairman.
PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad was relieved of his duties as Kelantan and Terengganu PKR chairmen.
The Kelantan chairmanship will now go to Tanah Merah branch chief Datuk Seri Mohamad Suparadi Md Noor. The Terengganu PKR chairman post will go to Kemaman branch chief Ahmad Nazri Mohd Yusof.
The restructuring also saw Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Fuziah Salleh taking over from party vice-president Amirudin Shari as Pahang PKR chairman.
Amirudin however will continue to helm Selangor PKR.
There were no changes to the other state leadership posts.
Fahmi said the central leadership council today also discussed several other issues. These include the humanitarian crisis in Gaza; and the party's and Anwar's firm stance to see peace in the Middle East, which is now being closely-watched by the international community. Anwar is PKR president.
"The party president also explained about current issues including the national address and the government's policies, besides urging party members
and supporters to work together to find ideas to further the Madani government's agenda.
"The central leadership council discussed its preparedness in facing the soon-to-be-held Sungai Bakap by-election," he said.
