SHAH ALAM: MIC will extend its support to the unity government candidate in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was confirmed by MIC president Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran.
"I received a call from the MIC president and he told me they would help in the by-election. That was what Vigneswaran told me," he told reporters after PKR's 25th-anniversary celebrations here today.
Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman said reports implying that MIC would boycott the by-election in Selangor, were untrue.
"The report suggesting that they (MIC) refuse to cooperate is not true," he said.
Anwar, however, did not elaborate if MCA would be following the decision made by MIC. Anwar was responding when asked to comment on reports that MCA and MIC would not be campaigning in the by-election if the unity government's coalition did not field a candidate from Barisan Nasional (BN).
Vigneswaran previously alluded that MIC would not help the unity government with the campaign for the by-election.
It was also reported that MCA will not campaign in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election if the unity coalition does not field a candidate from Barisan Nasional (BN).
It was previously reported that the Election Commission (EC) has fixed May 11 as polling day and April 27 as the nomination day for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.
The by-election is being held following the death of its three-term assemblywoman Lee Kee Hiong from the DAP.
