KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has an advantage following the political developments after the elections in the state, said its deputy chairman Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili.

"Among them, the drama starring Umno leaders; the decision of several leaders to leave the Warisan ship, and also the establishment of the local party, Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, in line with the demand of the Sabah people to make Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) a coalition of all local parties.

"My take on all these is that whatever happens, GRS is getting stronger, and I believe this is the best coalition to govern our beloved state of Sabah.

"I am confident and believe that the GRS government is the best choice to lead the people and elevate our political struggle," said the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president during the party's 39th anniversary at the Hakka hall here last night.

Despite being present at the event, his speech was read by party his deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.

The coalition now has 39 assemblymen including 24 from Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, PBS (seven), Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku or Star (six), Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (one) and GRS (one).

The number of Warisan elected representatives were reduced to 14 to date from 23 seats it won in 2020 state election.

Meanwhile, he said despite the passing of the Anti-Party-Hopping Act during last year's state assembly sitting, it would not necessarily curb elected representatives from crossing parties.

"The frog may become more creative in hoping to attract other parties because the culture of party-hopping seems very synonymous with Sabah.

"Among all states, we may have the highest number of 'frogs.' Many want to eliminate the 'hopping frogs,' but we must bear in mind that frogs are not only good at jumping but also capable of diving. Therefore, we need to address this issue before it happens."
