KOTA KINABALU: Many people thought United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) was done for after the state election in 2020, but it has proven them wrong, says its secretary-general.

And now, the return of founding members to the party continues to reinforce its relevance, said Nelson Angang.

Former deputy chief minister and deputy president Datuk Wilfred Bumburing rejoined the party on Friday, along with 100 former members, at the invitation of the president, Datuk Ewon Benedick.

"I believe the return of these leaders will inspire confidence in potential members," Angang said.

Those who returned did not impose any condition and were not promised any posts, he added.

"Many did not believe Upko would survive after the last state election. However, being in the opposition for more than two years and now being part of the Madani government show the determination of the party to continue its struggle."

Upko also understands the importance of contributing to the nation-building narrative, and having a partner who appreciates our role, he said.

Angang said the relentless pursuit of rights under Malaysia Agreement 1963 by the party and Benedick had opened the eyes of many to what Upko is capable of.
