JOHOR BARU: Johor chapter Bersatu emphasised that the party has sufficient credible leaders yet its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin plays a crucial role in empowering the party.

State Bersatu deputy chairman Mohd Solihan Badri, said Muhyiddin's presence is pivotal in ensuring the party retains a respected and integrity-driven leader, to enable the Malay community to have a political entity that guarantees, defends, and advocates for their interests.

"His decision to maintain the status quo also means that he remains an alternative to the current government's leadership, which has failed to fulfil promises or manifestos even a year after the15th General Election (GE15) held on November 19 last year," he said.

"However, we want to stress that our hope and aspiration for Muhyiddin's leadership does not imply a shortage of leaders within the party.

"Instead, his involvement and input are still needed to carry out improvement and empowerment processes within Bersatu," he said.

Muhyiddin's presence as the president will ensure Bersatu is prepared for GE16, and will work towards securing the unity cooperation between Bersatu, PAS, and Gerakan, to form Perikatan Nasional's (PN) coalition.

"Bersatu Johor expresses relief and gratitude to Muhyiddin, who is also the Pagoh member of parliament, for agreeing to retract his decision not to defend his presidency in the upcoming 2024 party elections," he added.

Earlier, Muhyiddin was reported saying that he will not defend his presidency.

However, he retracted his decision later.
