PADANG TERAP: Kedah Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid is not ruling out the possibility of split votes following the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance's (Muda) move to join the fray in the six state elections on Aug 12.

The state Umno liaison committee chairman said Muda's move would trigger different perceptions among young voters, which will lead them to have more voting options than those provided from the two-cornered fight expected between Pakatan Harapan (PH)-BN and Perikatan Nasional (PN).

"We are unsure whether they (Muda) will contest for seats in Kedah since the party only announced (its presence) in Selangor," he said.

Nevertheless, Mahdzir said it was up to Muda to contest for seats in the state as it was part of the democratic process.

"In a democracy, we can't stop anyone from contesting. Any party that is legally registered is entitled to contest the election," he said.

Yesterday, Muda introduced its first four candidates for the Selangor state election.

They are Muda secretary-general Amir Hariri Abd Hadi, who is contesting for the Seri Serdang state seat, and Syaidiyah Izzati Nur Razak Maideen, who will contest for the Batu Tiga seat).

R. Thanusha will contest the Sentosa seat and Melanie Ting Yi Hlin will contest the Bukit Antarabangsa seat.

Muda said it would introduce more candidates soon.
