KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional (PN) will table a motion during the Dewan Rakyat sitting tomorrow on the exemption given to Umno under the Societies Act 1996 (Act 832) on the resolution for the top two posts to remain uncontested during the party's 2022 General Assembly (PAU).

Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) said it was necessary for the motion to be presented in the August House as it concerned the public's interest.

"I only got to know about this when Kota Baru (Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan) was debating and I was shocked.

"I believe the issue must be brought to the Parliament's attention as the public needs to understand the reason behind the exemption.

"This is very alarming and we need the clarification from the ministry on whether the letter is true or otherwise," he said when met by reporters at the Parliament lobby, today.

Earlier today, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that Umno had been given an exemption on the resolution for no contest for the posts of president and deputy president passed during the party's 2022 PAU.

Saifuddin said the exemption was made based on Section 70 of the Act.

Soon after, PN chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan claimed that the circulated letter over the additional no-contest motion by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) dated March 2 had stated the additional motion was invalid.

He said the letter had mentioned the additional motion was contrary to Article 9(3) of the Umno Consitution, which required the top leadership position to be put to contest every three years unless it has to be postponed.
