KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi's father Datuk Dusuki Ahmad has been appointed as Umno Ulama Council chairman.

Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the formation of the council was part of party's proposed reforms.

In his presidential policy speech yesterday, Zahid had promised the party's ulama council would be formed soon.

"With the appointment, we hope the religious group can be together to guide us in the right path.

"The formation of the council is important for Umno because of the Ulama (religious scholars) and Umara's (holders of political authority) relationship is an important element to ensure the country's administration follows Al Quran and Sunnah," he said during his winding up speech at the 2022 Umno General Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today.

The formation of the council is among the five directions outlined by Zahid to ensure the party moves forward.

He also announced the formation of Umno Institute that will be chaired by members of the National Professors Council members, Prof Emeritus Dr Kamaruddin M. Said as chairman and Prof Datuk Dr Abdul Mua'ti @ Zambri Ahmad as deputy chairman.

"The chief executive is Prof Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi from Universiti Malaya while Supreme Council member, Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi is appointed as the institute's chief coordinator and executive secretary," he said.
