KUALA LUMPUR: There are two different schools of thought on the no-contest motion for the top two posts that was passed during the 2022 Umno General Assembly.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said while one accepted it after the motion was passed during the assembly, another said the posts shall be contested, in accordance with the party's constitution.

"There are views saying that it is okay, as long as the matter was passed in the (party) general assembly, which is the highest authority in the party when it comes to making decisions.

"On the other hand, although the general assembly is the highest authority in the party, it is however still subject to the party constitution according to Clause 8.1," he said at a press conference today.

Ismail Sabri said under the constitution, when it comes to the selection of party's top posts, it must be conducted through polls to be held once every three years.

"There are views that according to the constitution, the selection of the party's top posts shall be made every three years.

"When it is stated as 'shall' (in the constitution), therefore no choice, it must be done. If it is 'may', we still have a choice.

"As such, the general assembly cannot make a decision that contravenes the constitution," he said.

Asked if the Registry of Societies (RoS) could intervene with the decision, Ismail Sabri replied: "The RoS can be referred to in getting its views on whether the decision is valid or not,"

The party general assembly today approved all motions including an additional one proposing the posts of party president and deputy president to remain unchallenged in the upcoming party polls.
