KUALA LUMPUR: Six Umno supreme council members and ministers were appointed as the "caretakers" for the upcoming state elections.

Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the appointed party leaders will be in charge to ensure the focus and strategy of the party during the six state elections namely in Penang, Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan, Selangor and Negri Sembilan.

"We will appoint a supreme council member or a minister for each state involved as recommended by the delegates to ensure the focus and strategy of the party during the elections is smooth.

"As Tok Mat (Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan) announced earlier, the Supreme Council has agreed to appoint Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican as the six state elections coordinator," he said during his winding up speech during the 2022 Umno General Assembly held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today.

Mohamad, who is also the defence minister, has been appointed as the Negri Sembilan caretaker, followed by Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mahadzir Khalid for Kedah, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin, who is also Higher Education Minister to manage Terengganu elections, Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir who is also the Foreign Minister to lead in Kelantan.

For Penang and Selangor, the caretakers would be Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman and International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.
