KUALA LUMPUR: More than 90 per cent of the Umno delegates has approved the additional motion to not contest the party president and deputy president posts in its party polls.

Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Said said the voting process was held in the Merdeka hall this evening, with Umno permanent chairman Tan Sri Badruddin Amiruldin asking the delegates to rise from their seats in support of the motion.

"It (the additional motion) has been approved with only a few delegates rejecting the motion.

"More than 90 per cent of the delegates have voted in favour of the additional motion.

"Since it was hard to see the votes by show of hands, the delegates were told to rise from their seats and raise their hands to vote in favour," he said a at press conference here at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here, today.

Ahmad also rubbished claims that there were "phantom delegates" to vote in favour of the additional motion.

"There are security measures, people cannot simply walk into the hall as all the delegates have their own tags to permit entrance into the Merdeka Hall," he said.

Earlier today, former Rembau Member of Parliament Khairy Jamaluddin claimed there will be "phantom delegates" mobilised into the Merdeka Hall to provide support to the additional motion.

The additional motion was proposed by a delegate representing Negri Sembilan Umno, Mohd Shukri Shamsudin.

During the debate session of the Umno president's policy speech, Federal Territories Umno has rejected the additional motion for the posts of party president and deputy president to remain uncontested in the party polls while Johor Umno said the additional motion was flawed.

Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said a majority of the delegates yesterday (Jan 13) were in favour of the additional motion.
