BERA: It is voluntary, not mandatory, for members of Parliament to declare their assets, caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.

He said there are no regulations that require candidates contesting for the parliamentary or state seats to do so.

"As of now, only those appointed as Ministers and Deputy Ministers are required to declare their assets.

"There is no need to declare our assets as we only do what is required of us.

"When they win, members of Parliament are also asked to declare their assets but some of them do not because it is not required of them to do so.

"And, members of Parliament can do business," he said in a press conference after officiating the Malaysian Family Carnival: Gegor Bera Youth at the Bera Convention Hall, here today.

Pakatan Harapan candidates from the PKR contesting in the 15th General Election (GE-15) are required to declare assets.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is currently investigating the RM18.85 million asset declaration made by PH parliamentary candidate for Pandan Rafizi Ramli.

Ismail Sabri said Rafizi may be investigated under the Money Laundering and Prevention of Terrorism Financing Act (Amla).

"There are those who make this a political issue to trap those who do not follow suit," he said.
