KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has dismissed a suggestion to form a new government with Barisan Nasional and Pas for the sake of Malay unity.

He said Malaysia was a multiracial country and the government had always consisted of all races in the country.

“We are not interested in the idea. Our country is multiracial, this is a reality that we cannot deny.

“Ever since independence, we have always had a government that represented all races,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here, today.

Yesterday, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Dr Mahathir should form a new government with BN, Pas, and partners from Sabah and Sarawak if the prime minister was sincere in honouring the position of Malays and Islam.

In a Facebook post, Mohamad Hasan said Umno and PAs must be given a significant role, and not just as a passenger under the new government.

On a separate matter, Dr Mahathir said only Malays could restore Malay dignity, and must not depend on others or the government.

“I only speak the truth. I don’t think I had done anything wrong by saying the truth in my speech (at the Malay Dignity Congress on Sunday).

“If we can’t reprimand or advise, how can we correct things (in any way)?

“We cannot give praise to people who do wrong, that’s not right,” he added.
