KOTA KINABALU: Former Umno stalwart Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak said he decided to apply to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) because the party practices multiracial politics, which reflects his views.

Through his blog, Salleh Said.com, he said he wanted to help PKR lead a multiracial progressive politics that emphasised on stability and moderation, especially in the state.

"In view of racial-based politics and extremism that can threaten the country's unity and stability today, I believe PKR has the right formula to ensure the country is safe from such threats.

"Since my foray into the political scene, I have remained a moderate, progressive and proponent of peace and stability. I believe I have made the right move and can contribute towards Sabah's stability and prosperity in particular, and Malaysia in general, through my involvement in PKR," he added.

Salleh, who contested the Kota Belud parliamentary seat in the 14th General Election (GE14), received 19,167 votes, losing to Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) candidate Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis who received 23,429 votes.

Yesterday, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil in a statement confirmed that he had received Salleh's membership application online. He added the party’s political bureau would discuss and consider the application at the next meeting.
