TANAH RATA: Umno has questioned the current composition of the Election Commission (EC), asking if it is in line with the Federal Constitution.

The party’s secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa said presently, the EC is made up of its chairman Azhar Azizan Harun, with the rest of the commission members having resigned.

Those who resigned on Jan 1 were the deputy chairman and five commission members.

Annuar said this raises a question from the legal point of view as to whether the EC is in compliance with the law, especially the Federal Constitution.

“Article 114(1) of the constitution states the EC 'shall be appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong after consultation with the Conference of Rulers and shall consist of a chairman, a deputy chairman and five other members',” he said at a press conference, here, today.

Anuar said he is bringing up the issue today following the EC's announcement on the upcoming Semenyih by-election.

The EC has since announced that the Semenyih by-election will be held on March 2 with the nomination on Feb 16.
