SUNGAI PETANI: Pendang Umno chief Datuk Suraya Yaacob said its up to the Umno Supreme Council whether an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) should be convened following the crisis faced by the party.

She said an EGM cannot be called by individuals but must be decided by the party supreme council.

“Right now the party supreme council has not even held a meeting to discuss the matter.

“Everyone (in Umno) is waiting for the supreme council’s direction...we will follow whatever is decided,” she said.

Suraya, who is Sungai Tiang assemblywoman, however declined to comment when asked about the party constitution which required 96 divisions to make written requests for an EGM to be held.

Meanwhile, Arau Umno division head Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said he too would leave it to the party leadership to decide on the matter.

“Just do whatever is necessary....It does not matter to me.

“I just want to take care of my division...my country,” he said.

Shahidan said it was pointless to talk about the issues (surrounding Umno) as he had already given his views prior to this.

“So as far as I am concerned they (Umno leaders) should just do whatever is necessary,” he said.

Suraya and Shahidan were responding to calls by several other Umno leaders for the leadership to convene an EGM to decide whether party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should continue heading the party.

This was following an exodus of Umno parliamentarians who had abandoned ship after citing a loss in faith in Zahid’s leadership.
