KUALA LUMPUR: MIC has pledged to stay loyal to Barisan Nasional (BN) and agrees with the proposal that Umno strengthen its cooperation with Pas.

MIC president Tan Sri S. Vigneswaran said he was confident that the “marriage” within Pakatan Harapan (PH) will not last long, thanks to its efforts to “steal” BN parliamentarians.

He said PH’s actions to bring BN members of parliament into its fold via “backdoor dealings” made it look like its leaders did not have any belief in its own component parties.

“They are trying to show their ‘weapons’, that they can garner even more MPs. There are those who are threatening (BN MPs), there are those who are making offers. No matter what happens, MIC will continue its planning with BN and Pas,” he said when contacted.

Vigneswaran was asked to comment on the actions of Umno MPs and assemblymen who have quit the party, and others who are said to be urging party president and BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down within 10 days.

In an exclusive interview with the New Straits Times Press, Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin had said 36 BN MPs had signed a letter a month ago declaring support for Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He had said 33 were Umno members, two MIC members and one from Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS).

Vigneswaran said the current political climate had led to worry among the people.

“Whatever happens, the perception of the people towards the current political situation is one of disappointment,” he said.
