SHAH ALAM: Candidates for PKR positions at branches where re-votes are being held on Nov 11 should be allowed to inspect the polling centres before or on the day of the election.

Juwairiya Zulkifli, who is one of the hopefuls for the position of Kuala Selangor branch chief, said she would be making the demand to the party’s central election committee.

This, she said, was because she was worried that the branch elections would be sabotaged again.

“I will be sending an official letter to the committee chairman Datuk Rashid Din soon. There is a need to put in the demand following Sunday’s election which had to be postponed.

“We did not expect the situation to turn out to be so bad. And if the committee itself cannot guarantee the security and transparency of the election, we have no choice but to make the demand.

“The committee must be more responsible in ensuring the security of not only the voting system but also the infrastructure at the polling venue.

“We will ask that branch head candidates or their representatives be allowed to inspect the polling venue when the committee is setting up on the night before or on the morning of polling day,” Juwairiya told the New Straits Times Press.

She said, though the committee had set Nov 11 for the re-vote, the polling centre had yet to be determined.

The Kuala Selangor PKR election which took place at the Kuala Selangor Indoor Stadium on Sunday had to be postponed following what was at first said to be telecommunications glitches.

Several hours later, a jammer, a gadget which jams telecommunication signals, was found in the seating area in the stadium by a Kuala Selangor District Council cleaner.

A report was subsequently lodged at the Kuala Selangor police headquarters about 2pm.

Kuala Selangor police chief Superintendent Md Asri A. Wahab said investigations revealed the device to be a “mobile phone jammer with six antennas”.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for sabotage. Anyone found guilty under the section is liable to a jail term of not less than a year and not exceeding five years, or fine, or both.
