KUALA LUMPUR: A 1-minute video showing a man sexually harassing a woman at the Maluri Light Rail Transit (LRT) station platform has jolted social media users into calling for the authorities as well as RapidKL for an explanation.
The video shows a man, wearing a black t-shirt and jeans, seen holding down a woman who was screaming for help, and a few other LRT users were seen trying to break them apart by punching and kicking the harasser while pulling the girl away from him.
A few seconds into the video, the woman was saved and ran away, leaving her shoes behind. The harasser stood up and fixed his tshirt while looking around, then taking the woman's shoes and walking away.
Halfway through the video, the same harasser was seen standing on the train tracks, banging on a LRT coach door using the woman's shoe and screaming 'buka pintu! (open the door!)'
The video, which was rapidly circulated on Twitter via account @localrkyt, as well as on Tiktok platforms since this morning, showed that the incident occurred at 8am yesterday at the station, and the person who uploaded the video questioned the absence of police and LRT officers during the incident.
While many social media users raised questions of authorities' presence during the incident, others speculated that the harasser might be drunk.
However, the most-talked issue on social media this morning took a turn when a Twitter user under username @xxzarraa claiming to be the victim pleaded for the video to be taken down from the social media platform.
"Please, i beg you to take down the video. Watching it back makes me more traumatised.
"The case is already under police investigation. Please delete the video. I'm traumatised enough," she said, in tagging the account that circulates the video.
She also said that the station's RapidKL staff as well as auxiliary police had helped to hide her away from the harasser who had continued to chase her when she went to the station's ticketing counter.
Earlier, a TikTok user named Jaclyn made a video in response to the incident and posted on her account under username @monolidtreasure, pushing for the harasser to be reprimanded as soon as possible.
"We as a human being, we just want basic safety and that is not even delivered by the public, LRT station (management).
"This man must be held accountable for his action, and the police (as well as) LRT officers, please take responsibility for all passengers in LRT stations.
"And please put in place safety measures in order to prevent this incident from happening again," she said.
The New Straits Times has reached out to Prasarana Malaysia Berhad for comments, and were given a brief answer that the RapidKL management are aware of the incident and will be issuing a statement on the matter soon.
