KOTA BARU: Kelantan has recorded its first fatality of the year due to leptospirosis.

State health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said the woman, who was from Tumpat, died early this year.

"A total of 282 leptospirosis cases have been reported in Kelantan between January and May.

"So far, we have recorded one fatality involving an adult woman from Tumpat district," he said in a statement.

Dr Zaini said Kuala Krai district recorded the highest with 81 cases, followed by Tanah Merah (53) and Kota Baru (33).

The others are Gua Musang (31), Jeli (30), Pasir Mas (14), Tumpat (13), Machang (10), Bachok (9) and Pasir Puteh (7).

Last year, he said a total of 792 leptospirosis cases were recorded by the department.

He urged the public to seek immediate treatment at a nearby health clinic once they discovered the symptom of leptospirosis.

He also advised people to maintain good hygiene especially when visiting recreational parks.
