KUALA LUMPUR: Three items have been identified by the Home Ministry to further increase Malaysia's ranking on the subsequent Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP).

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said among the things being looked into included capacity building, inter-agency cooperation and enhancing laws and regulations.

"Malaysia was previously listed in Tier 2 in 2017 and when I took charge (of the Home Ministry) we managed to be upgraded to Tier 2 Watch list," he told reporters after closing the Retired Senior Police Officers Association (Respa) annual general meeting at the Police Academy here on Tuesday.

He attributed the upgrade to Tier 2 mainly due to an increase in arrests made on human trafficking cases as well as prosecutions and sentencings.

"We do not look at it as a job well done but are committed in going forward toward being upgraded to Tier 1.

"In the report, there were aspects clearly stated that were not fullfilled so we will definitely be looking at ways to complete it," he said adding that the impact of being listed as Tier 2 was that there was no risk of sanctions on our products especially in terms of our agriculture industry.
