GERIK: A 65-year-old Orang Asli man was tragically killed, believed to have been trampled by an elephant in a rubber plantation area in Kampung Perlar, Kemar Resettlement Area (RPS) here yesterday.
District police chief Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood said authorities were alerted to the incident at 5.40pm, and he was pronounced dead by the medical officer at RPS Kemar Health Clinic.
Initial investigations suggest that the man had ventured into the plantation area around 3.15pm on the same day.
"His daughter, who was at home nearby, heard the sound of the elephant and her father's cries of distress," he said in a statement today.
"Upon stabilising the situation, she and her brother-in-law rushed to the scene, discovering her father lying in a pool of blood. She also caught sight of the elephant."
Zulkifli added that police believed the man was fatally trampled by the elephant, with the case classified as sudden death.
"We urge residents of Pos RPS Kemar to exercise caution during farming activities and to promptly notify authorities upon sighting wild animals in the area," he said.
