PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has refuted Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin's accusations of selective prosecution involving the bribery probe and charges against his son.
Its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, said all investigations carried out by the anti-graft agency to uncover corruption activities are conducted in a professional manner.
"I do not agree with that statement (that MACC is selectively prosecuting) because our actions are all conducted professionally, regardless of background, whether they are civil servants, politicians, or even the government of the day.
"When we receive a report and there is an offence, we will charge them in court.
"That is my job. There is no selective prosecution here." he told reporters after "The Sin of Corruption: A religious perspective" book launching event here today.
Azam said this in response to a statement made by the Opposition leader, who is also the Bersatu secretary-general, claiming that the probes into his son are selective prosecution by the MACC and an attempt to "kill" his political career.
Earlier this month, Hamzah's son was charged in Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur near here with accepting cash RM100,000 in bribes as inducement to use his influence to obtain a tender six years ago. (hyperlink: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nst.com.my/amp/news/crime-courts/2024/0...)
Muhammad Faisal Hamzah, 40, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him before judge Rozina Ayob.
According to the charge sheet, Faisal was accused of dishonestly accepted the bribes from Izmir Abd Hamid as inducement for Heitech Padu Bhd to appoint Rimba Merpati Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Per My Solutions as marketing consultant because of his influence.
It was for the companies to be then paid a commission of RM700,000 after Heitech Padu Bhd is awarded a RM33 million 'Supply, Rental, Implementation, Training, Support and Maintenance of Security Infrastructure' tender by the Companies Commission of Malaysia.
