KUALA LUMPUR: The United States Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard D. Kagan, on Monday hosted his first US national day celebration in Malaysia.
The early ceremony marked the upcoming US' 248th Independence Day, which is celebrated on July 4.
The event, held at a renowned hotel here, was attended by some 500 guests, including foreign heads of missions, Malaysian government officials, and business leaders.
Kagan said the diversity of the attendees, which included NGO activists, educators, government officials and university representatives, is a testament to the breadth and depth of the US-Malaysia partnership.
"It is a reminder of the fact that the US relationship touches so many people across Malaysian society," he told reporters at the event.
On the same note, Kagan acknowledged the responsibility he and his colleagues at the embassy feel in continuing to build on the strong foundation of US-Malaysia relations.
"We have something that is really good, and by working together, we can make it even better," the career diplomat said.
Kagan also expressed optimism that through collaborative efforts, the partnership can be elevated to new heights, ultimately providing greater support and benefits to people in both countries.
The guest-of-honour was Transport Minister Anthony Loke who represented the Malaysian government.
Themed "Sports", the event featured stage performances by the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur's band, Combo KL.
July 4 marks the 248th anniversary of the United States' declaration of independence and is celebrated annually as a national holiday in the US. — BERNAMA
