ALOR STAR: The Kedah government is mulling using custom-made clamps from Germany to plug 23 leaks on the submerged water supply pipeline from the mainland to Langkawi.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said this is based on a recommendation by the project consultant following the completion of an integrity survey carried out along the 36km-long pipeline.

"Based on the pipeline's integrity survey report, we may proceed with using clamps to plug the leakages, but we are proposing longer clamps which we will have to order custom-made from Germany.

"This will help to avoid future damage to the clamps due to strong (sea) current, pressure (in the pipeline), vibration and so on.

"We will implement the recommendation by the consultant soon," he said.

Yesterday, Langkawi Umno Youth chief Mohd Radhi Abdul Rahim voiced concerns that residents in elevated and remote areas were increasingly frustrated by the frequent water supply disruptions in the island.

He had said residents in several settlements in Kuah town, Kampung Kisap, Belanga Pechah and Ayer Hangat are frustrated with the water supply disruption that has been going on for the past three years.

Earlier today, Bernama quoted the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) as saying the Malut Dam in Langkawi is the only water reservoir in the country still recording danger levels at 28.5 per cent until yesterday due to an ongoing dry spell.

The agency, in a statement, said according to National Water Service Commission (Span) data, water reserves in four other dams are at warning level.

They are the Muda Dam in Kedah (32.17 per cent); Timah Tasoh Dam in Perlis (47.43 per cent); Semberong Barat Dam in Johor (47.64 per cent) and Teluk Bahang Dam in Penang (47.9 per cent).
