KUALA LUMPUR: The opening of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's campus in Doha, Qatar, puts Malaysia's education on the world map, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar, who officially opened the campus yesterday, said it was significant because UKM began as a public educational institution with Malay as its primary medium of instruction.

"As one of the individuals who signed the memorandum urging the establishment of a public university with the national language as the medium of instruction, I am proud to be with the UKM staff on this glorious day," he said in a Facebook post.

"Hopefully, what UKM has pioneered will open the doors to more Malaysian universities to follow suit."

Anwar congratulated UKM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Ekwan Toriman on the opening of the UKM campus.

Anwar's opening of the UKM campus in Doha was in conjunction with his three-day official visit to the country which ended yesterday.
