KUALA LUMPUR: Reports claiming that Malaysia is the first country in Southeast Asia to be listed by the United States as a state sponsor of terrorism by international news agency Reuters are false.

According to Bernama, Reuters has denied publishing any such reports.

This comes after a news report– purportedly published by Reuters– began circulating online.

The US embassy in Kuala Lumpur has also denied claims of placing any sanctions on the country.

"The United States has not imposed any new sanctions on Malaysian companies nor listed Malaysia as a state sponsor of terror," the embassy wrote in a posting on their X (formerly Twitter) account.

Their posting included a screenshot of the report that had spread online which they have declared as fake news.

Reuters, the Communications Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have all been tagged in the post.
