KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will meet a top United States official tomorrow on the movement of money to Iran and its proxies, including Hamas, via the Malaysian financial system.

Saifuddin said he would explain Malaysia's position to the US Treasury's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, Brian Nelson.

"I will be meeting Brian Nelson tomorrow morning, firstly to listen to anything that he has to say and at the end of it to provide an explanation on the government's stance," he said to reporters after the contract signing ceremony at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) and National Security (Natsec) Asia 2024 exhibitions.

This follows a Reuters report that the Nelson will be in Malaysia this week as Washington seeks to combat funding for Iran and its proxy groups as well as evasion of its sanctions on Russia.

In December, the US Treasury imposed sanctions on four Malaysia-based companies it accused of being fronts supporting Iran's production of drones.

Washington recently imposed further sanctions targeting Iran, including over Iranian drones used by Russia in the war in Ukraine, as the US seeks to ratchet up pressure on Tehran after its attack on Israel.
