KOTA BARU: The state Immigration Department issued more than 15,000 border passes a month for Malaysians to travel to Thailand.

Kelantan Immigration deputy director (Management) Nik Akhtarulhaq Nik Abdul Rahman said the border pass were issued at five of its offices in the state.

Three of the offices were located in the border area, while the other two were in the town area.

"There was high demand for border passes, especially during school and public holidays.

"An average of 700 border passes were issued in a day — or more than 15,000 in a month — at our offices in Rantau Panjang, Pengkalan Kubor and Bukit Bunga, as well as our two offices which are serviced by our new counter at the state Immigration complex here," he said at the department's Hari Raya open house here today.

Nik Akhtarulhaq said the department's new counter was opened on March 17.

"The new counter was opened to ease the heavy congestion at our four offices. All counters will be opened every day except weekends from 8am to 4pm."

He said currently, the new counter was only for border pass applications, and the department would consider opening it to international passport applications.
