KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) respects MCA and MIC's stance to sit out of the campaign if Barisan Nasional does not field a candidate in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

Selangor PH election director Ng Sze Han said PH Selangor will continue strengthening cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN) leadership in preparation for the by-election.

"PH Selangor will continue to strengthen cooperation with BN leadership to face the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election and to maintain the momentum of the unity government's cooperation," he told the New Straits Times.

Meanwhile, former DAP Serdang member of parliament Ong Kian Ming believes that DAP Selangor highly values the assistance expected from BN leaders, at national, state, and local levels, including grassroots members in Kuala Kubu Baharu.

Describing the situation as a 'tough fight', Ong said he is sure of the unity government's ability to organise a unified campaign and present a compelling value proposition to the voters of Kuala Kubu Baharu in the by-election.

He also expressed satisfaction with the support extended by BN leaders at various levels.

He said this includes Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohammad Hassan, who is advocating for BN component parties' involvement in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-elections.

"I am also glad that Umno supreme council member Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has met with Umno leaders in Hulu Selangor in relation to the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election campaign," he said.

Previously, MCA and MIC said they would not campaign in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election if the unity coalition did not field a candidate from Barisan Nasional (BN).

On April 4, the Election Commission (EC) set the date for the nomination of candidates and early voting for the by-election on April 27 (Saturday) and May 7 (Tuesday) respectively.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Lee Kee Hiong on March 21.

Lee, 58, who had been the Kuala Kubu Baharu assemblyman under the Hulu Selangor Parliamentary constituency since 2013, passed away after battling cancer for the past few years.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election is the seventh by-election to be held after the 15th general election (GE15) in 2022.

The electoral roll for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election has 40,226 people consisting of 39,362 regular voters, 625 policemen, 238 armed forces personnel and spouses and one overseas absentee voter.
