KOTA KINABALU: The Natural Disaster Research Centre (NDRC) at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is now offering industrial training to four students from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), expanding their exposure to disaster research and climate change management, Sabah Media reported.

Director of NDRC Associate Professor Dr Carolyn Melissa Payus said that the training includes hands-on experience with flood risk modelling, seismic activities, and climate change analyses, crucial for the students' Bachelor of Applied Science (Geoscience) programme.

The trainees will also operate the SEISCOMP3 system, a real-time seismic monitoring setup at NDRC's lab, developed in strategic collaboration with the Malaysian Meteorological Department in 2021.

Furthermore, these students will participate in community service programmes organised by NDRC, contributing to disaster education in high-risk areas and collaborating with related governmental bodies like MET Malaysia and the Department of Mineral and Geosciences (JMG).

Since its inception in 2018, over 14 students have successfully completed their industrial training at NDRC. Carolyn encourages more students from other universities to apply, aiming to enrich their academic and practical knowledge in geosciences.
