KUALA LUMPUR:  "Let the law judge Hafizul's actions, we as a family leave it completely to the police to investigate this case," said Hanif Harawi, the younger brother of Hafizul Harawi, the suspect in Sunday's shooting at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) .

Hanif said the arrest of Hafizul, 38, who was on the run since the shooting at the KLIA Terminal 1 arrival hall, was a relief to his family, especially his mother, Hayati Bakri and father, Harawi Mohd Sihat, who had previously pleaded for him to surrender to the police.

He said that since the news broke, the family tried to contact Hafizul repeatedly but calls and messages sent went unanswered.

"It is true that we were surprised by what Hafizul did but the incident had already happened. We have accepted this a test from God , even though our mother and father are very sad to the point of affecting their health.

"No matter what, our parents and us five brothers want Hafizul to be responsible for what he did. He cannot avoid facing the consequences of his actions," he said when contacted, yesterday.

Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that Hafizul was arrested at a location in Kota Baru, at about 3pm yesterday.

Police today obtained a seven-day remand order against the suspect and he is expected to be brought to Kuala Lumpur today for further investigations.

Hanif, who is also a religious teacher, said that the arrest of Hafizul and the investigation carried out by the police after this will unravel the question behind the incident which has confused his family.

This is because, he said, Hafizul is a cheerful person and likes to joke but his action of daring to shoot in an open place at the airport surprised even his close friends.

"That is why after Hafizul escaped, we appealed to him to surrender to the police immediately. We will not protect him if he really committed the crime and this case needs to be resolved according to the law.

"The family knows that Hafizul, who has six children, is having problems with his wife, but we did not interfere in the matter because the couple's relationship is good at times. So, we are confused as to what prompted him to act like that," he said.
