SHAH ALAM: Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (Luas) today said it had detected diesel residue on the surface of the intake weir at the water treatment plant (LRA) at Batu 11, Cheras.

It said the find was made at 9.30am.

"(Initial) investigations found that the residue had leaked into Sungai Langat from a nearby industrial area, based on the smell coming from the sewerage system. Following the find, Luas placed a bag of activated carbon and 12 oil-observing pads into the sewer to stop the flow of oil into the river," it said in a statement.

Further investigations revealed an area in front of vacant premises in the industrial area where traces of diesel were found.

"It is believed that vehicles had been washed in this area, releasing the diesel. The area was cleaned up by a contractor (appointed by Luas).

"Luas will continue to closely monitor the situation in Sungai Langat," it said.
