SIBU: Sarawak Energy Berhad allocated RM42 million last year to finance improvement projects in Sibu, Kanowit, Kapit, Daro and Dalat in central Sarawak, TV Sarawak reported.

Sarawak Energy Group CEO Datuk Sharbini Suhaili said this included the construction of a new substation in Kemuyang, Sibu, completed in late 2023, to enhance the power supply and reorganise the distribution system.

"Additionally, we are implementing a smart grid project aimed at achieving the desired level of supply security and reliability in our system.

"This project is targeted for full implementation by 2025," he said during a Ramadan breaking fast event with Sarawak Energy at the Sibu Islamic Complex Hall on April 2.

During his speech, Sharbini shared that since 2018, the state-owned power supplier has successfully connected electricity to 2,671 rural residents in the Sibu, Selangau, Kanowit, Kapit, and Mukah areas.

"As the primary electricity supplier in Sarawak, under the regulatory jurisdiction of the Utilities and Telecommunications Ministry and the Energy and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, Sarawak Energy has achieved nearly full electrification across the state," he added.

Sharbini said Sarawak Energy has taken steps to minimise power supply interruptions during the upcoming Aidilfitri festive season. These measures include ensuring the operational system's efficiency and preparing emergency steps for effective power recovery in case of short circuits.

"As the Aidilfitri celebration is approaching in just over a week, Sarawak Energy continues its efforts to ensure uninterrupted power supply throughout the festive season.

"We also welcome everyone's cooperation to report any suspicious activities at any Sarawak Energy's electrical facilities," he added.
