BETONG: The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee is set to evaluate requests for assistance in reconstructing homes and longhouses destroyed by recent fires, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sarawak Deputy Premier and committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that the committee will determine the allocation of aid upon receiving reports from the respective resident's offices.

"Once we receive the reports, the committee will decide on the quota within a week," he said.

He also said that the state government has a maximum allocation of RM70,000 available for this purpose, applicable to each individual home or unit within a longhouse.

His remarks came during a visit to fire victim Charles Tegalang in Nanga Tiga. Additionally, Uggah also presented a RM388,000 allocation funded by the Betong Division Development Agency to a contractor for upgrading the Kebun Cina farm road in Spaoh.

He said from last year to date, the agency has allocated RM30 million for the improvement of approximately 73 roads serving palm oil, pepper, and rubber plantations in the Bukit Saban area.

"We hope to assist all these farmers in developing their fields and becoming more productive," he said.
