KUALA LUMPUR: A weekend outing for a family of four turned tragic when a 10-year-old boy died while his younger sister and mother are still missing, believed to have drowned, in Seri Kembangan, Selangor today.

It is learned that the boy and his two other siblings, aged between four and 10, as well as his mother - all Indonesian citizens - were out fishing when they were suddenly swept away by the strong current of Sungai Kota Perdana river during the incident.

A Selangor Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said a team from the Serdang Fire and Rescue station was deployed to the scene after they were alerted of the incident at 4.35pm.

"The operation commander leading the team was informed by the 40-year-old father of the victim that three children and an adult (the victim's mother) were believed to have drowned in the river.

"At 5.18pm, one of the children, who is a nine-year-old boy, was found safe by members of the public who joined the search operation," the spokesman said in a statement today.

About 40 minutes later, the spokesman said the search team recovered the body of the victim at about 1km from the area where he was last spotted.

"The boy was confirmed dead by representatives from the Health Ministry at the scene," the spokesman said.

He added that the search operation is still on-going to locate the victim's four-year-old sister and his mother, 38.

Serdang police district chief Assistant Commissioner A A Anbalagan, in a statement, confirmed the incident.
