KUALA LUMPUR: The Prisons Department has denied according any special treatment to jailed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Prisons Department director Datuk Nordin Muhammad said all inmates are managed in accordance with the set rules and standard operating procedures.

"Anyone sentenced to prison receives the same treatment as per the rules.

"This includes Najib, who is serving out his term at the Kajang Prison. He remains subject to the rules under the Prisons Act 1995," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

He said stern action would be taken if any prison officers were found to have accorded special treatment to any inmate.

"This is something the prison authorities will not compromise on. We continue to uphold the law to the highest standards," he said.

Nordin's comments came after preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin, a former inmate at the prison, recently claimed that Najib received special treatment compared to other prisoners.

In an interview with Malaysiakini, Wan Ji alleged that Najib was not required to wear prison garb and was placed in a 'special block'.

Muda earlier today called on the Home Ministry to clarify claims that the former prime minister was accorded special treatment in the prison.

In 2022, Najib began serving a 12-year jail term after he was convicted in the SRC International case. He was also fined RM210 million.

Earlier this year, Najib, who has applied for a royal pardon, had his sentence halved.
