GEORGE TOWN: It is the duty of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ensure consumers are not exploited by financially powerful telecommunication companies, the Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP) said.

CAP president Mohideen Abdul Kader said before licences are granted, the MCMC must scrutinised the telco service agreements to ensure they contained no unfair terms.

"If they contain unfair terms, they can be challenged in courts or tribunals. "However, that would involve time and money which many people from the lower income group cannot afford.

"As such, it is the duty of the MCMC to ensure consumers are not exploited by financially powerful telcos," he told the New Straits Times in response to an article in the NST's Letters page, which was published today.

In the article, Dr Victor David from the Faculty of Medicine, AIMST University, had wrote in about his experience with a telecommunication service provider.

He lamented on the fact that he was asked to pay RM2,000 after ending a subscription through e-mail although he was told otherwise when he personally went to terminate the service a month earlier.

Mohideen, however, said CAP generally received very few complaints against telcos.

"Even then, most are past the two-year agreement."
