KUALA LUMPUR: Of the 98,725 jobs created through foreign direct investments (FDI) approved from 2022 to 2023, 86,880 (88 per cent) of them are for Malaysians, the Dewan Rakyat heard today.

Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong said 78,033 of the jobs for Malaysians were in the manufacturing sector.

"The five industries that generated the most number of jobs for locals are the electrical and electronics industry with 40,618 positions, nonmetallic mineral products (6,746), machinery and equipment (5,555), measurement and scientific equipment (3,791) and chemical products (2,684)," he said during minister's question time.

Liew was replying to Datuk Larry Sng's (PBM-Julai) question on the number of jobs generated for Malaysians resulting from FDIs.

Liew said 8,847 services sector job were expected to be created in three sub-sectors: support service with 5,124 posts, health (1,407) and communication and information (1,022).

He said from 2022 to 2023, 898 FDIs worth RM281.5 billion were approved in manufacturing and services under the ministry's supervision through the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).

"The inflow of foreign investment contributes to the economic growth, consequently bringing a positive impact on the country and people by generating business opportunities, knowledge, skills and technology transfer, as well as the creation of jobs for locals.

"Meanwhile, investment projects take 18 to 24 months to be realised, depending on the scale of the project and the current economic conditions."
