KUALA LUMPUR: The sale of special vehicle registration numbers last year stood at RM311.8 million, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the sales of the M_M series alone stood at RM21 million.

"The sale of Special Registration Numbers (NPI) began in 2019, while bidding through NPI started in 2023," he said in response to Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (PN-Kuala Kangsar).

Iskandar Dzulkarnain asked about the revenue collected from NPI from 2018 to 2023.

Loke added the ministry recently introduced NPI for the GOLD series.

"The amount collected so far for the GOLD series is RM17 million.

"GOLD1 was successfully secured by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, contributing to the government's revenue," to which Loke expressed his gratitude to the King.

"Half of the revenue is returned to the ministry for the implementation of several initiatives.

Loke said all proceeds from the sale of vehicle registration numbers have been channelled to the government's consolidated fund.

"The ministry does not receive any funds from the proceeds of the sale of these vehicle registration numbers.

"However, as announced by the prime minister during the tabling of the 2024 Budget, a portion of the NPI sales will be allocated to less privileged groups; to pay for driving tests for Class B2 motorcycle licences, e-hailing and taxis, benefiting over 40,000 youths from less privileged families, along with helmets for adults and children to the less fortunate families among others."
