KUCHING: A total of 1,459 primary and secondary schools across Sarawak, including around 416,000 students from Year One to Form Six, commenced their first school session on Monday, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

The Education Ministry announced there would be no formal teaching and learning sessions in classrooms during the first week of school.

Sarawak State Education Department director Datu Dr Azhar Ahmad said during this initial week, students would engage in various activities prepared by the schools.

The aim is to help students re-adjust to school life and develop various skills needed for their continuing education.

He mentioned this during the 'First Day At School' programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Matang Jaya in Kuching this morning.

For the record, a total of 34,285 Year One students and 28,351 Form One students returned to their respective schools to begin a transition programmed in the first week of the school session.
