LIMBANG: In a boost to Sarawak's utility infrastructure, the water treatment plant in this region has the capability of producing up to 87 million litres of treated water per day, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sarawak Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said this during his visit to the Berawan Limbang Water Treatment Plant, which currently produces 40 million litres of treated water daily.

Highlighting the potential for increasing the water production capacity to 87 million litres, Julaihi said the collective water treatment facilities in the Limbang Division, encompassing the Limbang and Lawas Districts, are currently capable of meeting the region's water demand, which stands at 40 million litres.

However, he also emphasised the urgent need to address the issue of 'non-revenue water' (NRW) or water loss, which poses a significant challenge.

The minister underscored the immediate necessity for sourcing additional water, constructing new water treatment plants, and installing new pipelines along with replacing aged pipes in identified areas to improve the water supply infrastructure.

His statement followed a detailed briefing by the management of LAKU Management and the Rural Water Supply Department regarding the current state of water supply in the Limbang Division.
