KUALA LUMPUR: City police have denied claims that they on four occasions applications to organise a women's march in city scheduled for this Saturday.
City police chief, Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid, said the organiser, Women's March Malaysia (WMMY), had sent a notice to the Dang Wangi police headquarters on Friday.
However, it was returned to the organiser after the latter failed to complete a form containing 14 questions.
"We have checked. We did not receive three other notices, as claimed by the organiser. However, police have contacted them to have them complete the notice.
"We are not stopping any form of assembly as it is the people's rights to assemble. However, the notice is important so that the police have all information regarding the assembly," he told the press after attending a 'Majlis Sumbangan Pelajar Sekolah Murid Tahun Satu' organised by the KL police contingent here today.
It is understood that based on the notice sent by the organiser to the police on Friday, only nine of the 14 questions were completed.
Allaudeen said police will continue to provide security, including traffic control, for the event even if the organiser fails to complete the details in the notice.
"All Malaysians have rights, not just the organiser and the event participants. Others also have a right to do business, to recreation and carry out their daily activities.
"As such, KL police will still help to ensure security and public safety. We don not want any activities during the assembly to impede on the rights of others," he said.
He said any offences could be subject to existing laws including the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
WMMY had on Sunday criticised the police for denying its notice for this year's Women's march. The WMMY 2024 Organising Committee said in a statement that it attempted to serve a notice of assembly to the police four times but were denied.
