SANDAKAN: A plantation worker, 21, got injured when a palm oil harvesting tool pierced his abdomen at a palm oil plantation here today.

The victim was sent to Duchess Of Kent Hospital here.

However, the hospital had to seek assistance from the Fire Department when it had difficulties removing the tool.

District Fire and Rescue Department Chief, Senior Assistant Superintendent Severinus Nidzam Sainkui, said they received a call from the hospital's Emergency Department at 10:35 am.

He said a team of firemen was dispatched to the location.

"The male victim was pierced by the 'loading spike t-handle' while harvesting palm oil.

"The firemen proceeded to cut the tool using a grinder machine," he said in a statement to the media today.
