KUALA BERANG: A top student who earned a Petronas scholarship for his tertiary education and is supposed to further his studies at a university in the United Kingdom is now bedridden after he suffered a ruptured blood vessel.

Wan Murni Wan Ngah, 46, from Kampung Jaba, Bukit Apit, in Ajil, here said that her son Muhammad Amirul Nazmi Sam, 20, was confirmed to have suffered a ruptured blood vessel after fainting on Dec 18.

She said the incident was realised by a cleaner at around 9am. The cleaner had come over to the residence rented by Petronas and inhabited by students where Amirul was found to have fainted in the hall.

She said Amirul was supposed to have left to return to Terengganu following the semester break but then he had to be rushed to a private hospital to receive medical treatment.

"My son was then referred to Cyberjaya Hospital and placed in the intensive care unit (ICU) for 12 days before he was then moved to a normal ward.

"After spending 16 days at Cyberjaya Hospital, Amirul was transferred to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu and he was treated there for seven days," she said when met here earlier today.

The single mother who works as a sweeper said the scan and inspection done by the hospital found that a blood vessel to the brain had ruptured and caused Amirul to be paralysed on the right side of his body.

She said her son was supposed to complete his A-level education at a private university in Kuala Lumpur next month and in June he was supposed to further his studies to the UK.

Wan Murni said that following the incident, her son Amirul has had to postpone his tertiary education for a year and she is hoping and praying that her son can make a full recovery and be as he was before.

"For the time being I have had to take leave from where I work and if Amirul's condition does not improve then I will have no other choice but to stop working in order to care for him.

"Amirul now depends completely on milk and disposable diapers, and I receive RM500 from the Welfare Department," she said.

According to her, apart from having to use up what little savings the family has, her siblings have also helped in trying to ease her burden in seeing to and raising her two other children who are also studying, one in a public university and the other at a boarding school in the same district.

Amirul is a former student of SM Sains Dungun in Terengganu who earned a Petronas scholarship after he obtained 9As in the 2021 SPM examinations.
