KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will ask the government to look into calls for a constitutional amendment to empower the syariah legal system following yesterday's Federal Court ruling.

Its deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said this is to avoid a repeat of issues surrounding the ruling made by the apex court over the Kelantan syariah criminal enactment.

"We will ask the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) (Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar) and minister in charge of law (Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said) to look into the suggestion if necessary.

"We do not want a repeat of this issue since such a development will affect the image of the country's judiciary system as well as the syariah laws.

"This is although the ruling passed by the Federal Court yesterday has nothing to do about undermining the powers of the syariah court or Islam," he told reporters.

Mohamad was asked to comment on the calls made by Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin for all stakeholders, irrespective of political background, to discuss a constitutional amendment to empower the syariah legal system following the apex court ruling yesterday.

"The ruling yesterday is purely about technical disputes.

"Having said that, Umno will support any effort to uphold Islam and the country. We want the best for all of us.

"And any issue and dispute must be addressed and resolved accordingly to avoid the matter from creating an unstable condition," he said.
