GEORGE TOWN: To foster a love for STEAM (Science, Technology, Education, Art and Mathematics) education among the youth, Penang is set to open a new MakerSpace at Taman Harapan in Jalan SP Chelliah, Buletin Mutiara reported on Feb 8.

The announcement was made by the state Human Capital Development, Science and Technology committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo during his visit to the construction site of the MakerSpace, accompanied by a team from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

The Taman Harapan MakerSpace represents a step by the city council to complement the previously established MakerSpace Lab in Balik Pulau.

"I would like to congratulate MBPP for establishing the second MakerSpace here at SP Chelliah in George Town, after setting up the first one in Balik Pulau.

"The MakerSpace at Taman Harapan is set to be completed soon, and we hope that this facility will play an important role in instilling an interest in STEAM among the young ones," Jagdeep said during his visit.

Jagdeep highlighted the success of the Balik Pulau MakerSpace, which has benefited over 10,000 students in Balik Pulau from 2019 to 2023. With 129 maker labs already established in schools across Penang, the initiative reflects the region's strong interest in STEAM subjects.

"In Penang, there is no shortage of interest in STEAM subjects among the students, and we will keep moving forward in attracting more individuals to take up these subjects," Jagdeep said.

MBPP Town Planning director Mohd Bashir Sulaiman extended his gratitude to Jagdeep for his unwavering support of the MakerSpace initiative.

He expressed hope for the establishment of more such facilities, highlighting their potential to enhance STEAM learning and creativity among Penang's youth.
