BETONG: Sarawak is gearing up for the new economy, emphasising the need for a skilled workforce proficient in Science and Mathematics to seize diverse opportunities, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas outlined the state's ambitious plans to delve into emerging economic sectors such as the hydrogen economy, carbon storage, and green energy under the leadership of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

He stressed the necessity for engineers, technologists, accountants and other professionals to drive the state's economic ventures.

"This is the future we envision for Sarawak. We want the children of Bukit Saban to be part of this journey and to engage actively.

"Therefore, proficiency in English, Science, and Mathematics must be emphasised from the early stages in primary schools. A strong foundation will determine success at secondary and tertiary education levels and foster a genuine interest among students," he said during the Academic Year 2023/2024 Appreciation Ceremony at SK Nanga Gayau on Feb 7.

He also encouraged the mastery of the English language, citing its advantages for individuals in the global economy.

To promote a culture of reading and eradicate illiteracy, Uggah announced a contribution of RM40,000 to the Parent-Teacher Association of SK Nanga Gayau to support reading activities and other academic achievement programs.
