KUALA LUMPUR: TNG Digital Sdn Bhd (TNGD) is set to impose a one percent fee for all top-ups to the Touch 'n Go eWallet (TNG eWallet) using credit cards starting from Feb 23.

However, TNGD announced that top-ups through debit cards and DuitNow will remain free of charge.

TNGD chief operating officer Alan Ni said the move was taken to curb excessive cash withdrawals using credit cards to bank accounts as well as to reduce the substantial costs associated with credit cards borne by TNGD thus far.

He recommended TNG eWallet users to opt for DuitNow for top-ups as it involves a fund transfer process between banks.

"As the largest financial institution managing over 20 million verified e-KYC (Know Your Customer Through Digital Platforms) users, we must strike a balance between convenience, security, and the long-term sustainability of the company's costs.

"To provide more options to users, we still allow credit cards as one of the top-up channels, but we also encourage users to top up their eWallets through DuitNow or debit cards, both of which are free.

"When opening an eWallet account, users are provided with a DuitNow account number similar to a bank account. You can find this DuitNow account number in the eWallet profile section," he said.

In October, TNGD lowered the free credit card top-up limit to RM1,000 per month, compared to the previous RM5,000.

TNGD said that this was a measure to restrict credit card withdrawals to bank accounts.
