MELAKA: A mamak restaurant in Jalan Hang Tuah, here, has been ordered to close for two weeks for failing to maintain cleanliness.

The state Health Department (JKNM) deputy director (Food Safety and Quality Division), Dorothy Dayang Henry Sum, said that the closure order was issued after her department conducted a surprise inspection, following complaints from the public, and a 21-second video clip showing an employee of the restaurant urinating openly in the back drain of the premises, which went viral on social media.

"During the inspection, we issued four compound notices for various offences.

"The premises were also ordered to be closed for two weeks, starting this evening (yesterday), under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983. In addition to this, the premises also received a score of 64 per cent, as a result of the assessment carried out by enforcement," she said at a press conference, after inspecting the premises yesterday.

She added that the team also detected cigarette butts, something which should not happen considering that smoking is not allowed in the food preparation premises, and the restaurant is also without a working toilet.

The restaurant had previously been ordered to close twice in 2022, but still repeated the same mistake, she said. –BERNAMA
